Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, which dates from the early 16th century. The lions are derived from the arms of the Counts of the Rhein, who ruled the town in the 14th century and who granted the city rights. The meaning of the two so-called wolf's irons is not known.
