Origin/meaning

The arms wer enever officially granted.

The arms are identical to the arms of the Affligem Abbey. Hekelgem was given in 1295 to the abbey by Duke Jan II of Brabant. The two keys are the symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of the abbey.
