Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 13, 1818, confirmed on July 9, 1840 and again granted on March 11, 1986.

The grill is the symbol of St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the city. The beetroot is the old symbol for the Waasland area, of which Lokeren is one of the largest towns. For the history of the beet, see Sint-Niklaas.

Initially the arms were granted with the beet on the shield and two supporters. However, on old seals the beet was placed asa crest above the shield and no lion supporters. In 1986 the arms were thus changed conform the 18th century seals.

The colours have no historical origin and were decided in 1818.
