WAARSCHOOT

Province : Oost-Vlaanderen

Wapen van Waarschoot

Official blazon

In sinopel een gekroonde Onze-Lieve-Vrouw met Kind, beiden met nimbus, neerzittend in een bloementuin, alles van goud, met aan haar voeten een schildje van sabel beladen met een gemetselde burcht van zilver.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 3, 1985.

The municipality did not have any historical arms or seals, so the arms granted were based on the arms of the Priory of Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe ten Hove. The priory was founded in the village in 1444. The seal from 1539 showed St. Mary and Jesus on a throne.

As in the early medieval times the village and area was a possession of the Counts of Vlaanderen and was governed by a court, chaired by the Lord of the Oudburg ('old castle') in Gent. The small shield in front of St. Mary shows the arms of the Oudburg.
