Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 3, 1997.

The golden griffin is the historical symbol of the territory of Rostock, whereas the black griffin is a variation os the arms of the Duchy of Pommern.

The present district is situated in the historical territory of Pommern, and its predecessor, the territory of Rügen. The original griffin of Pommern is red, but the part of Pommern which is now the district Nordvorpommern was ruled by a branch of the Dukes, which used a black griffin.
