Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Germany - Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) |
PASSAU (PA)
State : Bayern
Additions : 1973 Wegscheid, Griesbach im Rottal, Vilshofen
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on June 27, 1974.
The panther in the new arms is taken from the old arms of Griesbach adn Vilshofen. The wolf for Passau and the diamonds for Bayern were continued in the new arms.
The old arms were granted in 1968. The arms show in the upper part the diamonds of Bayern, as the district became a part of Bayern in 1803. Before, it belonged to the Passau Abbey and this is symbolised by the wolf of Passau. The three waves symbolise the three rivers in the district, the Donau (Danube), Inn and Ilz.
