The arms of the city (former German name Preussisch Friedland) show a running boar. The boar, whose origin is not known, appears already on the oldest, 14<sup>th</sup> century, seal of the city. The boar first faced left, but since the 17<sup>th</sup> century the boar faces right. The black gridlines (used on the seal as a simple decoration) behind the boar are now officially part of the arms and are still used.
