Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on April 1, 1836.
The oldest known seal of Altdorf dates from the late 14th century and shows a quartered shield, quartered with the arms of Henneberg (a rooster on a mountain) and Zollern (quartered silver and black), as the town became a possession of Margrave Albrecht and his wife, a countess of Henneberg. In 1393 Ruprecht, Count of the Pfalz bought the town and the new seals thus show the golden lion of the Pfalz.
