Origin/meaning
The eagle in the arms of the city is derived from the eagle of Upper Silezia. The oak branches are of unknown origin, although Hupp indicated that it was derived from the German word Ast (branch) and thus partly canting for the German name of the city (Schurgast). The image of Hupp (1925) below shows the eagle in more historically correct colours.
