Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on October 2, 1823 and again on July 21, 1838.
The arms are known since the 16th century. The arms are first seen on a map of gaillard from 1557.
The arms are a combination of elements of the old seals of the city. The oldest seal is known from 1309 and shows the Imperial eagle with two keys. The contra-seal from the same time shows a lion (of Flanders ?).
