Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Belgium - Belgische Gemeentewapens / Armorial de Belgique |
OOSTAKKER
Province : Oost-Vlaanderen
Incorporated into : 1975 Gent
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on September 17, 1953.
The lion in the arms is derived from the arms of the St. Bavo Abbey in Gent. The village of Oostakker was a possession of the abbey for many centuries (see also Lochristi, Sint-Amandsberg and Sint Lievens Houtem).
St. Mary is the patron saint of Oostakker.
