Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on March 2, 1838 after a request of the local council for arms.
The original proposal from the council showed a shield with a chief of Bayern, and in the main shield a 'picture', of a 'typical farmer of the Allgäu region' working with a scythe on a field in front of a group of mountains. King Ludwig simplified these arms to the above image. Unfortunately the colours of the farmer were not described properly, so many different variations in the colour of the clothing have been used.
