German In Silber eine wachsende schwarzgefugte rote Zinnenmauer, daraus wachsend ein rotes Gebäude mit kreuzbestecktem Giebel – darunter drei silberne Bogenfenster – und zwei gezinnten Seitentürmen mit silberbeknauften, blaugeschindelten Spitzdächern und je vier silbernen Bogenfenstern (2/1/1); im offenen silbernen Tor unter hochgezogenem schwarzem Fallgatter ein schwarzer Löwe.

Origin/meaning

The oldest known seal of the city dates from the 15th century and already shows a gate with the lion. Although the actual size and shape of the gate/castle varied widely, the basic composition remained the same. The lion is the lion of Meissen.
