Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 8, 1991.

The arms show in the four quarters the arms of the main historical regions and rulers to which parts of the district belonged. The first quarter shows the banner of the city an State of Würzburg, as the city of Meiningen as well as several other towns belonged to Würzburg from the 12th century until 1542.

The second quarter shows the arms with the rooster of the Henneberg County. The Counts of Henneberg-Schleusingen ruled a large area of the district and granted city rights to Wasungen and Römhild.

The third quarter shows the arms of Sachsen, for the Duchy of Sachsen-Meiningen, to which nearly the complete district belonged from 1610-1918.

The fourth quarter shows the arms of the County Römhild, which were granted to the county in 1467.
