Origin/meaning

The hammer in the arms is clearly a canting symbol, the German name of the town is Hammerstein (hammer-stone). The sun and crescent are most likely religious symbols. The arms are known from the oldest seal of the city, which is known since the 16^th century. All later seals, except one, show the same arms.
The only seal of the city that shows another image dates from the late 17th or early 18^th century. It does not show any arms at all, but on the right a hill with two working miners, and on the left side a man, cutting a tree. In the middle the eye of God is shining.
