Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on June 1, 1996.
The tower in center represents a legendary Moorish castle atop the hill of Nossa Senhora do Castelo (Our Lady of the Castle) on which a chapel was built around 170 years ago (symbolised by the star of St. Mary) . The castle was a vital Moorish defence fortress until it was conquered about 1000 years ago.
The previous arms were granted on December 13, 1963.
