Origin/meaning
The combination of fish and keys already appeared on the seal of the city dating from the 15th century. The keys are most likely a symbol for the Rode Abbey, which owned the area since the 13th century. The meaning of the fish is not known. In the early 20th century the arms were identical to the composition of the seal (see below), later the arms were modernized (above).
