Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on October 26, 1955.
The right half of the arms are those of the Land van Wijnendale, to which the area belonged in medieval times. In 1660 the estate of Kleef (Cleven) was given as a dowry to Maria of Vlaanderen with her marriage to Adolf of Kleef. The village of Langemark was the seat of the council of the new territory. The Dukes of Kleef (Kleve) held the village until the late 18th century. The letters CIL in the arms of Wijnendale refer to Cleven In Langemark.
The left half shows the quartered shield of the De Joigny de Pamele family, who acquired the estate of Gruyterszale (also 's Ruuterszale) in 1631 until the late 18th century. This estate was also part of the territory of the Langemark municipality.
