SZPROTAWA

Province: Lubusz
County: Żagań

Arms of Szprotawa

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms of the city clearly are of medieval origin and show a castle, with two towers with guards, and in fromt of a middle tower the arms of the Dukes of Silezia.

The oldest seal of the city is known from 1310 and already shows the above composition. On July 11, 1597 Emperor Rudolf II granted the arms to the city, but with the wrong crest (ostrich feathers instead of peacock feathers) and with a black eagle instead of the Silezian eagle. These arms remained in use until the late 20th century when the old arms were restored.
