The crossed swords in their scabbards are a reference to the battle of Alvalade, when in 1323, Queen Isabel appeared between the two confronting armies of King Dinis and Prince Afonso (future King Afonso IV) and made peace between father and son, avoiding a bloody battle. The swords were part of the aarms of São João de Deus.
