GÖRLITZ (GR)
State : Sachsen
Additions : 2008 : Görlitz (city), Lobau-Zittau (1994 Löbau, Zittau), Niederschlesischer Oberlausitzkreis (1994 Görlitz, Niesky (1945 Rothenburg), Weisswasser)
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on April 21, 2009.
The wall in the base with the blue field above are the arms of the Oberlausitz region and the city of Bautzen. The three linden leaves symbolise the local Sorbic population. The eagle is the arms of Niederschlesien, the lion is the lion of Bohemia, indicating that the region historically was part of either Niederschlesien or Bohemia. The lion and eagle are also part of the city of Görlitz.
The old Görlitz district (until 1994) did not use arms.
