Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on March 15, 1935.
The castle symbolises the castle of Santarém, an important fortress, taken by King Afonso Henriques. The taking of the castle was of great importance to the formation of the current Portuguese territory.
The small shield on the castle shows the Royal Arms and refers to King Afonso Henriques.
