Origin/meaning

The arms are probably canting, three church (Kirche) towers on a hill (berg). The mountains were later attributed to be the hills surrounding the town; the Borberg, Geiersberg and Schiesshausberg.

The oldest known depiction of the arms dates from the 14th century and shows three (wooden ?) towers on a hill. During the centuries the size and shape of the towers has changed considerably. The current shape dates from 1852, which, in turn, is based on a depiction from 1394.
