Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 25, 1986.

The main item on the shield is a horse-break (Pferdebremse or Pferdebramme) a tool used to keep horses quiet, especially when they were shoed. The tool is taken from the arms of the medieval Lords Von Hötzum from the 14th century. The three houses are a canting symbol, the name was probably Hotz-heim, and heim means house. The three houses also refer to the fact that the village was burned and rebuilt three times, in 1388, 1605 and 1648. The colours are those of the Dukes of Braunschweig, as the municipality belonged to the Duchy for many centuries.
