Origin/meaning
Pforzheim was founded in 1227 by Markgrave Hermann V of Baden. The first known seal of the new city dates from the same time and simply shows the arms of Baden (now the right part of the arms).
The present arms are known from the 15th century. The origin of the left part is not quite known. The red and gold bars are again derived from the arms of Baden, the blue and white may be the colours of the Wittelsbach family (see Bavaria), as the city belonged to the Pfalz from 1463-1750. The Wittelsbach family ruled the Pfalz. The four different colours are known from the 18th century.
