Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on december 22, 1966.

The city and island Fehmarn were a possession of the Counts of Holstein, who granted the city rights in 1406. The oldest seal, however, already dates from the 13th century and shows a canting castle (Burg) above some waves, symbolising the North Sea. After 1406 the arms of the Counts of Holstein were added. In the late 15th century the helmet and crest of the counts were added, but these were later removed again. The basic composition of the arms has not changed since.
