Origin/meaning
Chrzanow was founded as a town in the 14th century. The town used arms with Saint Nicholas from medieval times until the 19th century when new arms appeared. The new arms show arms of Saxony to the left and arms of Poland to the right. The whole is under a royal crown. These arms are exactly the same as those of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807-15) to which Chrzanow belonged from 1809 to 1815.
Both arms were used at the same time for many decades. Until the 1960s the St Nicholas arms were mostly used, since the 1970s the other arms reappeared and are still used.
Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of the main church in Chrzanow. Next to the Saint often the letters SN which is Latin for Sanctus Nicolaus were used.
