KLERKEN

Province : West-Vlaanderen
Incorporated into: 1977 Houthulst

Wapen van Klerken

Official blazon

Van zilver met rechter schuinbalk van azuur het schild geplaatst voor een wildeman van natuurlijke kleur en begeleid van twee distelplanten van sinopel, gebloemd van purper.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 6, 1956.

The arms are derived from the seal of the Vrije van Brugge (Brugse Vrije or Freedom of Brugge), an area around the city of Brugge, to which also the village of Klerken belonged. As no historical seals of the village itself were kknown, it was decided to use the shield of the Vrije, with one of the savages as supporter and thistles on the base. The thistles are normally placed on top of the arms, but to distinguish the arms from those of the Vrije they were placed belo the shield.
