Origin/meaning
The oldest known seal of Varnhalt dates from the middle of the 19th century and shows already an oak tree in a crowned shield. In a later seal the oak tree was replaced by a canting fern branch (Farn=fern).
When the municipality applied for approval in 1900, the State Archives replaced the fern for the old oak tree. The municipality initially wanted to keep the fern but gave in eventually, so the arms were finally approved in 1903.
Literature : Zier, 1964.
