Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Germany - Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) |
MELLE (MEL)
State : Niedersachsen
Incorporated into : 1973 Osnabrück
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on February 10, 1936.
The arms show the Grönenberg castle, built around 1250 by the Bishops of Osnabrück against the Counts of Ravensberg. The castle is in the district. The vassals living on the castle used a seal showing the castle and the town of Melle behind it. The arms are based on this early 14th century seal.
Until 1885 the name of the district was Amt Grönenberg.
