Origin/meaning

Aurich became a city in 1491 and received the right to use a seal in 1539. The oldest seal showed the two trees, but not the small shield.
In 1736 a second seal was made, that showed the arms with the small shield. The crown, however, was not placed on the shield, but was hanging above it. The small shield simply shows the town's initial.

The colours are also known from the 17th century. In the 19th century the crown suddenly disappears, but it was restored, now standing on the shield, in 1956 when the above arms were adopted.
