Origin/meaning

The arms show two towers and the lion of Bohemia. The oldest known seal of the city dates from 1336 and shows the local patron saint, St. Nicholas. A second seal from 1404 also shows the saint, whereas a slightly younger seal shows a city gate with a small shield with the complete arms of Bohemia (lion, and a crest with a black wing). Later seals only showed the lion in the gate, without a shield, as shown above. Smaller seals did not show the gate, only the lion. The latter was also shown by Hupp in the 1920s as city arms, se ebelow.
