Origin/meaning
Mengen already received city rights in 1276 by King Rudolf I of Habsburg. At the same time the first seal was made. It already showed a combination of a lion and a crescent. Its origin is not known, the crescent and star may have a religious origin, but may also have been an old village sign. The lion probably is the lion of Habsburg. The crescent and star have for a long time been used as the arms. The lion reappeared in the 19th century and when the arms were officially granted at the beginning of this century the lion remained.
