Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on August 4 1818.

It is unknown why the council applied for the lion. The colours are the Dutch national colours. When a council did not apply for colours, the Dutch government granted all arms in the national colours. After the Belgian independence the colours were not changed.

The only known historical seal showed the arms of the Van Boelare family and dates from the early 18th century. The family owned the estate of Smeerebbe in the 18th century. Their arms showed in a golden field a red escutcheon.

Literature: Servais, 1955
