Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on October 13, 1818 and confirmed on July 9, 1840 and again on March 1, 1993.
The origin of the siren (mermaid) holding a beet is not known. It may be a symbol for the sea, but this is not certain. The siren first appears on the seal of the local council in the 18th century. The beet is the beet of the Waasland region. For the history of the beet, see Sint-Niklaas.
