Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 1, 1836.

The oldest known seal of Altdorf dates from the late 14th century and shows a quartered shield, quartered with the arms of Henneberg (a rooster on a mountain) and Zollern (quartered silver and black), as the town became a possession of Margrave Albrecht and his wife, a countess of Henneberg. In 1393 Ruprecht, Count of the Pfalz bought the town and the new seals thus show the golden lion of the Pfalz. When the city of Nürnberg conquered the city in 1504 the small arms of Nürnberg were added to the lion.
