Origin/meaning

The arms were granted by royal decree on October 13, 1819 and confirmed on April 2, 1867.

The arms are derived from the seal of the local council dating from 1527 and 1694. The origin of the lion is not known. As in 1819 no colours were specified the arms were granted in the Dutch national colours. After the Belgian independence the arms were confirmed in the same colours.
