Origin/meaning

The arms are first known from 1588 from the local city hall. In 1603 they appear as arms of the city, in a roll of arms of vassals of the bishops of Bamberg. Later that century the arms appear on the seals and have thus never changed since.

The origin of the arms is not well known. The bishops of Bamberg had an estate in the town and when they visited the town the local guild had to protect the bishops. This guild received special privileges in the 16th century and was thus important in the town. The arms may be derived from the arms of the guild.
