Oorsprong/verklaring

Het wapen is een combinatie van de wapens van Lochem (leeuw) en Verwolde (koeken). Het grondgebied van de gemeente omvatte oorspronkelijk het Ambt Lochem, waaraan in 1854 de gemeente Verwolde werd toegevoegd.
