Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 24, 1972.

The field evokes the embroidery cloth with which hand-made embroidery is worked at in the city; embroidery reputed the best craftsmanship of its kind in the State of Sao Paulo; the chief with the tiara and the crossed keys are the symbols of St. Peter and are canting (Sao Pedro = St. Peter).

The supporters show that coffee and sugar cane are important agricultural products of the region.

The shield is surmounted by a mural crown appropriate to a city and a scroll below the shield bears the Latin motto "FIDE ET LABORE PATRIAE MAGNITUDO" (with faith and work I shall bring greatness to the fatherland).
