Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 4, 1998.

The fleur de lys is the attribute of the Blessed Virgin, patron saint of the city, the swallows represent love to the land and the immense quantity of those birds nesting and living in the city, the wavy bar alludes to the Tiete river which flows through the city and the scallops and six pointed stars come respectively from the arms of the Vieira and Tavares families, evoking Captain Antonio Vieira Tavares, who, in 1688, founded the village.

The supporters show that coffee and sugar cane are important agricultural products of the region.

The shield is surmounted by a mural crown appropriate to a city and a scroll below the shield bears the Latin motto, used since 1931, "LABOR OMNIA VINCIT" (work conquers everything).
