Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1906 and confirmed in 1934.

The arms were based on the oldest seals of the city, which date from around 1300. The arms show a fortified city with three churches, and a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Nassau. The city was a longtime possession of the Counts of Nassau. All later seal show a similar composition until the 19th century when the lion of Nassau was removed.
