Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. Description: A shield arced at top and base 2 inches (5.08cm) in width overall divided chevronwise blue (ultramarine) and white, a seven stepped orange area (one step in center and three on either side) issuing from base onto the white area, in chief two orange diagonal electric flashes with both ends pointed emitting from the top step of the orange stepped area, all within a 1/8 inch (.32cm) white border.
Distinctive Unit Insignia. Description: A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02cm) in height overall consisting of a silver knight’s helmet facing front and bearing a crest of three ostrich plumes one orange between two white all upon a field of four lightning flashes pilewise and contained on the two sides and bottom by a blue serpentine scroll inscribed with silver letters with the motto "VOICE OF FREEDOM," the scroll ending at either side next to the white plumes.
Origin/meaning
Shoulder Sleeve Insignia: Orange and white are the colors used for the Signal Corps. The blue area alludes to the troposphere, the lower portion of the atmosphere which extends, more or less, seven miles above the surface of the earth, the stratosphere forming the atmosphere’s upper portion. The seven steps of the orange area refer to antenna, wave length, frequency, modulation, selectivity, volume and control and also allude to the numerical designation (7) of the Brigade. The two electric flashes or impulses symbolize the transmitting and the receiving of radio and radar signals and communication, the white pointed area simulating the "bending" or breaking of electric waves (beams) in the troposphere and the scattering of a portion of them back to earth.
Distinctive Unit Insignia: Orange and white are the colors of the Signal Corps. The function of signal communications is represented by the background of flashes. The knight’s orange and white plumed helmet between on the wavy blue band, simulating a winding river, is a reference to the Brigade’s unofficial "Order of the Orange and White Knights of the Rhine."
The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was approved on 16 March 1970. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 18 March 1970. It was amended on 24 April 1998, to change the motto.
