Origin/meaning
In two edicts proclaimed in Madrid on November 8, 1539, the King of Spain and Germany, Charles the Fifth, granted the coat-of arms and the status of city to Guadalajara, whose people distinguished themselves for being brave and valiant. The recipients of the coat of arms had the "commitment to maintain the sovereignity of the city, foster trade and protect the poor and the needy"... thus read the heraldic legend, which included the Cross of Jerusalem in the banner.
This cross was considered a sign of the highest nobility and glorious, actions and it was reserved for the exclusive use of the King.
