Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on December 28, 1957.
The arms are taken from the seal of the town from 1653. The arms are probably the arms of Jakob de la Gardie, whose family founded the town. The Swedish name of the town is derived from his name.
In the middle of the 19th century B. Kene proposed to change the arms with two anchors behind the shield and the provincial arms in the upper right corner. These arms were not adopted.
