Origin/meaning

The green colour and the clover refer to Ireland, where the ancestors of the bishop originated. The gold refers to the Irish Protestants, the silver for the Catholics.

The star is a symbol for his rank as Captain in the US Navy, as well as for St. Mary as Stella Maris. The crescent is also a symbol for Mary and also refers to the church he was affiliated to before joining the Navy.

The lion is the symbol of St. Jerome, the second patron saint of the bishop, whereas the scallops stand for St. James. The clower also refers to St. Patrick the baptismal saint of the bishop's father.

The two ermine tails refer to the two cardinals under whom he served as a chaplain in the Military Ordinariate.
