Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The arms are based on those of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston which bear a red cross, with a quadrate center, on a blue field. The blue color is employed to signify the Gulf of Mexico at Galveston; the red cross signified the Divinity of Christ and the blood from the Sacred Heart, titular of the Co-Cathedral in Houston. The cross is charge with a silver heart, again signify Texas, but more especially to represent that Bishop McCarthy was the executive director of the Texas Catholic Conference at the time of his selection as a bishop.

Within the quarters of the shield are the other symbols of this Excellency’s life as a priest and bishop.
In the first quarter is a gold eagle with his wings folded, to honor the Bishop’s baptismal patron, St. John the Evangelist.
In the second quarter, is a silver stag with gold hooves and antlers, to honor the McCarthy family heritage.
In the third quarter is a silver representation of the Earth orbited by a rocket, to represent the City of Houston, the center for the United States’ space and lunar exploration programs.
In the fourth quarter are the three roses to represent St. Theresa of the Little Flower, the patron of the church where the Bishop once served as pastor and in which he received his Episcopal Ordination.

For his episcopal motto, Bishop McCarthy has retained the phrase “LORD, I COME TO DO YOUR WILL,” which was the Responsorial Psalm on the day it was announced he was to become an auxiliary bishop.
