Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on Apri l9, 1793.

The oar symbolises the town's importance as a harbour. The branch is probably canting for the Bladh family (Blatt-leaf), as due to the efforts of a father and son of the family, the town received city rights in 1785.

In the middle of the 19th century B. Kene proposed to change the arms, by adding the provincial arms to the upper right corner and placing anchors behind the shield. He also changed the oar to a rudder. These arms were never adopted though.
