Origin/meaning

The patron saint of the town is Our Lady of Monserrat, one of the many variations of St. Mary. She is represented by the fuchsia-colored rhombus located in the shield’s place of honor or center. The monogram is the “Ave María” monogram consisting of interconnected “A” and “M” often used to represent Mary. The symbol above her monogram is a stylized crown. The color fuchsia also represents the color of the Moca flower, a branch of which is placed in the lower half of the shield.

The arc of eleven (11) white stars represent the “barrios” or wards that make up Moca: Aceitunas, Capá, Centro, Cerro Gordo, La Cruz, Cuchillas, Las Marías, Naranjo, Plata, Rocha, and Voladoras. The golden star represents the last ward, Pueblo, which is the city proper.
