Official blazon

Shield: Per saltire , Teal and Or, on a lozenge of the second edged of the first between in chief three lightning bolts, two in pile and the middle palewise of the second , in fess two trench knives erect Sable, the finger grips inward and in base a representation of an Atztec pyramid Argent (Egshell), a wadjet of the third.
Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the California Army National Guard: From a wreath Or and Teal Blue, the setting sun behind a grizzly bear passant on a grassy field all Proper.
Motto: Hold the line.

Distinctive Unit Insignia, Description: A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Per pale Azure and Gules, an isosceles triangele Sable surmounted by another reversed Azure (Dark blue) bearing anither of the third; on a chief per fess Or and of the third, four saltires conjoined counterchanged. Attached below a Black tripartite scroll inscribed "HOLD THE LINE" in Gold.

Origin/meaning

Teal is the color associated with Branch Unassigned. The Saltire suggests military determination. Black denotes power. The Trench Knives (1918 Mark I) symbolises Warrior spirit and close combat. The Lightnings symbolises speed and the Electronic Communications and Warfare capabilities. The Wadjet an ancient Egyptian Symbol of Protection used to indicate the five senses. Here it is used to dentot andvance sensory and intelligence gathering functions of the Battalion. The Aztec Temple symbolises the Engineer Company and its Mexican and Central American Heritage.

The Blue and Red in the Distinctive Unit Insignia is the Colours of the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The Triangles symbolises the Four Companies of the Battalion working in cooperation to support the Brigade. The Chief alludes to the Physical Security Mission, suggesting Barbed Wire. The Four Saltires also suggest the Roman Numeral XXXX = 40, the original designation of the Battalion.

The Coat of Arms and Distinctive Unit Insignia, was both originally approved for the Special Troops Battalion, 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on 21 August 2008. They where redesignated for the Special Troops Battalion, 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on 1 September 2008.
